Visitors enjoy Streeterville for its mix of upscale shops, nightlife, eclectic dining, and, of course, its close proximity to Navy Pier. Bounded by Michigan Avenue and the Magnificent Mile to the west, the Chicago River to the south, Lake Michigan to the east, and Walton Street to the north, the neighborhood offers a blend of high-rise apartments and condos along with a number of townhouses along the river. This affluent area is one of Chicago's most iconic, housing a number of architecturally significant buildings, historical districts, Northwestern University buildings, museums, parks, and more.
Streeterville's history is perhaps the most confounding and controversial of any Chicago neighborhood, considering it was originally a sandbar off of Lake Michigan that was claimed in the late 1800s by George Wellington "Cap" Streeter, for whom it's now named. When Streeter washed ashore there after a storm, he claimed the land for his own, and along with his wife developed it into a shantytown following the Great Fire. City officials were none too happy with this turn of events, and so ensued open gun battles and ongoing eviction suits, which finally turned the tide by the early 1900s, when Chicago was able to take hold of Streeterville.
With Streeterville's close proximity to downtown, it is a haven for professionals. Its prime real estate and nearness to Lake Michigan and the family-friendly fun of Navy Pier also draws in established families. Bustling nightlife, culture, and history are also apt to appeal to families and individuals alike — although with more expensive housing, both sets tend towards the career-focused.
Navy Pier leads the pack for Streeterville landmarks. With a beer garden and fireworks in the summer, the Chicago Children's Museum, and the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, this stronghold along the lake provides countless hours of diverse entertainment. Streeterville's architectural and historic significance is significant, and the neighborhood is home to a multitude of iconic buildings like the John Hancock Center, Water Tower Place, and One Magnificent Mile. Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art may also be found in Streeterville.
